Custom items with AppleScript

Custom items run AppleScripts, so an icon on your tab can do almost anything. TabLauncher comes with a few built in; here are more you can add yourself.

How to add a script

Copy a script from this page, then right-click your tab and choose Add Custom → Script. Paste the script and click Apply Script.

Add Custom → Script in a tab’s menu Pasting a script and applying it

Then customize the icon’s look. The Tips page shows how to make a nice one.

Run every item in a tab

Opens all the items in the tab named “Tab Name”. Change the name after adding the script.

Don’t put this script on an item inside the tab it runs, or it will run itself forever. Keep it on another tab, or add it as a menu script on any item, and it appears in that item’s right-click menu.

tell application "TabLauncher"
tell (first tab whose name is "Tab Name")
		execute icons
	end tell
end tell

Convert image formats

Drop an image onto this icon to get a converted copy in the same folder. This one converts to JPEG; edit it for BMP, JPEG 2000, PICT, PNG, PSD, QuickTime Image or TIFF.

-- Ask for a file if none was dropped
try
	set tmp to filePath
on error
set filePath to choose file with prompt "Please select an image file."
end try

-- Save as JPEG
tell application "Image Events"
	set anImage to open filePath
save anImage as JPEG in (filePath & ".jpg" as string)
	close anImage
end tell

Set the desktop picture

Drop an image onto this icon to make it your desktop picture. Click the icon instead, and it asks you for an image.

-- Ask for a file if none was dropped
try
set filePath to POSIX file filePath
on error
set filePath to choose file with prompt "Please select an image file."
end try

-- Set the desktop picture
tell application "Finder"
	set desktop picture to filePath
end tell

Automate OneWaySync

Runs OneWaySync and starts syncing slot 2, picking up where it left off if it was cancelled, then quits OneWaySync after 20 seconds.

tell application "OneWaySync"
	tell slot 2 to resume
	delay 20
	quit
end tell

Speak the weather forecast

Based on a script from userbytes.com. Create an icon with this script, then edit it to set your city and the other options.

Badge: unread messages in Outlook

Shows the number of unread messages in Microsoft Outlook as a badge on the icon. Script by Rick Moerloos.

set messageCount to 0
tell application "Microsoft Outlook"
	set myInbox to inbox
set myMessages to incoming messages of myInbox
	repeat with theMessage in myMessages
if (is read of theMessage) is false then
set messageCount to messageCount + 1
		end if
	end repeat
	return messageCount
end tell

Badge: unread messages in Gmail

Shows Gmail’s unread count as a badge. Script by Rick Moerloos.

This one no longer works: since 2022 Gmail doesn’t accept a plain user name and password from scripts.

-- Replace USERNAME and PASSWORD with your Gmail login
set result to do shell script "curl -u USERNAME:PASSWORD https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom"
tell application "System Events"
set XMLData to make new XML data with data result
set feed to XML element "feed" of XMLData
set mailCount to (value of XML element "fullcount" of feed)
end tell
return mailCount
